BELREEFS

BELREEFS is the first offshore pilot project for large-scale restoration of flat oyster reefs in the Belgian part of the North Sea. The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a native species of great ecological and commercial importance. Following the decline of flat oyster reefs from coastal and offshore European waters in the late 19th century, several active restoration efforts have been initiated in Europe over the last two decades. The BELREEFS project presents some key innovations. It is the first time that oyster restoration of this scale will take place in offshore Belgian marine waters and specifically in areas where flat oyster beds historically occurred. Additionally, oyster larvae will be allowed to settle directly on suitable substrate in the lab, to be released afterwards at sea, a technique called ‘remote setting’. The role of MARECO will focus on the intensive monitoring of the reefs once installed. The aim is to establish a self-sustaining reef and make a significant contribution to the restoration of local marine biodiversity. Government, industry and science are joining forces to meet this complex challenge.
