Ocean Observation Digital Platform

The Digital Platform for Ocean Observation project will develop a web-based environment that enables Member States to upload ocean observation campaign plans and subsequently visualise, manage and extract them. The platform will focus on campaign metadata (who observes what, where, when, why, and how) rather than raw observation data. The project is part of the European Commission’s broader effort to enhance the transparency and efficiency of marine observation activities across the EU, directly supporting strategic objectives of DG MARE and CINEA under the European Green Deal, the EU Ocean Pact, and the Mission Ocean and Waters. The digital platform will also ensure compliance with EU reporting obligations while serving a diverse community of users by creating a single space for managing ocean observation campaigns. The Institute of Natural Sciences is the scientific partner in this project through the teams of BMDC and MARECO, who contribute domain expertise and scientific validation throughout the platform’s development. MARECO, in particular, provides expertise in ocean observation campaign planning and management, marine life taxonomy and stakeholder engagement.
