Annelore Van Nieuwenhove

Annelore Van Nieuwenhove (M.Sc. in Ecology and Biodiversity, University of Brussels) is a marine biologist with a great interest in anthropogenic effects on marine ecosystems and cetaceans in particular.

She started her career at the Institute of Natural Sciences as aerial operator, implementing the Belgian aerial surveillance program above the North Sea, being engaged in numerous environmental and maritime surveillance tasks.

At MARECO she investigates harbour porpoise distribution and behaviour in response to different human activities, using data collected through aerial surveys and passive acoustic monitoring, with a focus on the impacts of offshore renewable energy development in the Belgian part of the North Sea. She is also involved in the LIFE SeaDetect project, that wants to establish an automated whale detection and anti-collision system for vessels.
