Ellen Pape
Ellen Pape is a deep-sea benthic ecologist (PhD Marine Sciences, Ghent University, 2013) who studies spatial and temporal patterns in taxonomic, functional and genetic biodiversity, their drivers, the link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and how natural and anthropogenic disturbances affect them. Her research has focused mainly on meiofauna, with co-authored work on macro- and megafauna. Since 2014, she has investigated the ecological impacts of deep-seabed mining for polymetallic nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (northeast Pacific). Committed to translating science into policy and management, she has been a member of the International Seabed Authority’s Legal and Technical Commission since January 2023, providing scientific input to regulatory processes. She is also interested in how stakeholder engagement shapes research agendas and policy. Holding a 45% position at RBINS-MARECO and a 55% position at Ghent University’s Marine Biology research group, she structurally links both teams and strengthens expertise across the deep-sea scientific and policy domains.
