ELASMON - Towards effective monitoring for protection of sharks and rays in the Belgian part of the North Sea
The populations of sharks and rays in the North Sea have rapidly declined in recent decades. Knowledge gaps on their distribution and habitat use hinders their effective management and protection on a global level. The objective of ELASMON is to fill in these gaps in the Belgian part of the North Sea (BPNS) and develop a comprehensive knowledge guide and management plan for policymakers to appropriately monitor and protect elasmobranchs in the BPNS. The project will bring together knowledge from available data sources but also generate new data via developing and deploying a Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) system in selected areas of interest, and by using acoustic telemetry and tagging techniques to map habitat use and spatial movement patterns of elasmobranchs in the BPNS. MARECO will contribute its expertise on the development and deployment of non-invasive underwater camera systems. ELASMON actively contributes to the Programme of Measures for the Belgian marine waters (2022-2027) linked to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and Natura 2000 sites.
